How I Hygge|Hygge Essentials for a Cozy Winter

What is “hygee?” Pronounced “hooga” not “hige”.

Hygee is a Danish concept or way of life that most closely translates to “cozy togetherness.” Hygee is all about enjoyable the simple things in life that make us happy.

I first read The Little Book of Hygge when a psychology professor of mine introduced the book to me. The book is written by Meik Wiking. Meik Wiking is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. He’s committed to finding out what actually makes people happy and has concluded that “hygge” is the magic ingredient! Hygge is what makes Danes the happiest nation in the world. I think we could all use a little bit of that magic ingredient!

There are many things and activities that are “hygge” but some of the essentials are light (candes, fireplace, etc.), hot drinks, sweet treats, the process of cooking a home-cooked meal, cozy clothes, and spending time together in intimate groups. Hygge is not about tackling the “big things” people often think will make them happy. i.e. money and popularity. Hygge is about enjoying each present moment. Those little moments add up, to make us overall happier people.

  • Drinking Four Sigmatic hot cocoa with extra whipped cream

  • Taking time to slow down and talk to a friend or family member

  • Wearing all the cozy layers (plus fuzzy socks!)

  • Driving around to see Christmas lights

  • Lighting holiday-scented candles

  • Decorating my room with outdoorsy holiday decor (pine cones, garland, etc.)

If you want to learn more about all things hygge and enjoy a quick read, I recommend you check out The Little Book of Hygge.
